CONSUMERS HAVE RIGHTS!

Contrary to the perception of some persons, Jamaican consumers do have rights and are protected by a range of laws administered by various agencies of Government. The Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) believes that an increase in the awareness of persons about the twenty-seven (27) laws that currently exist to protect their interests, would greatly reduce the cry of “we have no rights,” often heard from dissatisfied consumers.

A review of our complaints database confirms that there is wide spread ignorance by businesses and consumers alike about these laws which protect the interests of the Jamaican consumer. Laws, which create a framework, by which contracts of sale are formed, redress is guaranteed and measures to protect the environment are ensured. These laws also dictate acceptable standards for the preparation, processing and packaging of foods and medicines.

The twenty-seven (27) laws are powerful and effective only so long as all of the players adhere to their rules & regulations. The Commission therefore urges those persons engaged in commercial activities to become familiar with and organize their activities in accordance to the established provisions of these laws. Failure to do so may result in harm to the consumer or punitive action against the business.

Admittedly some of these laws are seen as deficient. The CAC is of the view that only a conscious consumer with knowledge about the channels that are available to him/her can correct these deficiencies. We will therefore be providing information on some of these laws, which are most often breached, based on the frequency of the reports submitted by disgruntled consumers to the CAC. The Commission urges you to take advantage of this opportunity and learn about your rights under the law.
