CONSUMER GRIEVANCES FOR COURT SOON

Consumers will soon be able to seek redress from unscrupulous vendors and businesses through the courts.

The Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) is working towards having these matters settled in the Small Claims Court located on Sutton Street, Kingston.
This court and the CAC are finalising the arrangements of their union. It is expected that this will provide yet another option for aggrieved consumers to get justice.

CONSUMERS ARE ENCOURAGED
"This is an avenue we intend to utilise while we wait for the passage of the Consumer Protection Act. If there are claims that vendors refuse to settle, we encourage consumers to go this route," said Dolsie Allen, CAC chief executive officer at a recent JIS 'Think Tank' session.

Consumers who choose to pursue claims via this route must visit the offices of the CAC at 1B Holborn Road, Kingston and fill out a complaint form after which the Commission will bring the matter before the court. The Small Claims Court will hear cases relating to claims of up to $50,000.

Complainants will be required to appear in court but will not need to hire an attorney, as the Commission will make the necessary representation on their behalf.
