The Survey Overview
The Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) has for the past 10 years carried out its mandate to survey primary and secondary school textbook availability and prices. This year the survey was conducted between July 30 and August 3, 2007. The CAC’s Textbook Survey aims to capture and publish the prices of selected primary and secondary school books available in bookstores across the country.
Survey Coverage
The number of texts surveyed was arrived at after consultations with the Ministry of Education and Youth and was spread around Primary Level Education texts and 19 Secondary subject areas. The total number of texts totalled one hundred and twenty (120), eighty nine (89) Secondary Level Texts and thirty one (31) Primary Level Texts. Of seventy eight (78) outlets the official number of bookshops which participated in the data totalled sixty five (65). Twenty seven (27) of these outlets were from the Kingston Metropolitan Area while the remaining thirty eight (38) were from Rural Towns. Thirteen establishments (3 from the KMA and 10 rural towns) were either closed or refused to cooperate at the time of the survey.
